Ungdomskraft workers carrying a large waste bag — junk removal with the RUT tax deduction

RUT Tax Deduction on Junk Removal – How It Works (2026)

Junk removal can qualify for the RUT tax deduction — but not always. You can get a 25% RUT deduction on the labour cost, but only if the items being removed go to reuse. This means the furniture, household goods and other usable items are delivered to an organisation like Myrorna or a similar charity that accepts them for resale.

If the items cannot be reused — and must be taken to the dump instead — no RUT deduction applies at all. It is the destination that determines whether the deduction can be claimed.

Does junk removal qualify for the RUT deduction?

Yes, but with an important condition. Junk removal is classified as a household service and can qualify for the RUT deduction — but only if the removed items are delivered to a reuse organisation. This means the items must go to a charity like Myrorna, Erikshjälpen or a similar organisation that accepts them for resale.

If the items cannot be reused and must instead be disposed of at a recycling centre or landfill, no RUT deduction applies.

The deduction rate is 25% of the labour cost. Read more in our complete guide: What is the RUT deduction?

What can you have removed with the RUT deduction?

The following are examples of what qualifies for the RUT deduction when it comes to junk removal:

What is not included: Hazardous waste, asbestos and chemicals cannot be handled under the RUT deduction and require separate disposal.

How much do you save with the RUT deduction on junk removal?

If the items go to reuse, the RUT deduction covers 25% of the labour cost. You pay your share directly to the company — the company then claims the rest from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

Calculation examples (when items go to reuse):

Labour costYou payGovernment pays (25%)
SEK 2,000SEK 1,500SEK 500
SEK 4,000SEK 3,000SEK 1,000
SEK 8,000SEK 6,000SEK 2,000

Please note: if the items cannot be reused and must be taken to the dump, no RUT deduction applies at all — you pay the full labour cost.

The maximum RUT deduction is SEK 50,000 per person per year. The combined cap for RUT and ROT together is SEK 75,000 — if you don't use any ROT, you can use the full SEK 50,000 for RUT.

Important: the deduction only applies to the labour cost — not materials, mileage or VAT. With Ungdomskraft, you always see exactly what is included in the price before you book. Try our RUT calculator to work out exactly how much you save.

How do you use the RUT deduction in practice?

It is simpler than most people think:

  1. You book junk removal with a company that is registered with the Tax Agency
  2. You pay your share — 75% of the labour cost if items go to reuse, otherwise the full cost
  3. The company claims the rest from the Tax Agency
  4. You do nothing in your tax return — it is handled automatically

The only thing you need to keep in mind is to hire a registered company. Private individuals via apps like Tiptapp do not qualify for the RUT deduction — it requires a VAT-registered company.

RUT deduction on junk removal in a rental apartment – does it apply?

Yes. A common misconception is that the RUT deduction only applies to houses or condominiums. But the deduction applies regardless of housing type — rental apartments, condominiums, houses and holiday homes are all covered.

RUT deduction for estate clearance

Clearing an estate is often both physically and emotionally demanding. Removal of furniture and household goods from an estate qualifies for the RUT deduction, making it more affordable to hire professional help.

Ungdomskraft regularly assists with estate clearances — we handle all the practical work with respect and efficiency, and the RUT deduction is included directly in the price. Read more in our guide on RUT deduction for estate clearance.

Ungdomskraft always tries reuse centres first

At Ungdomskraft, we always stop at a reuse organisation first — like Myrorna or a similar charity — to see if they will accept the items. If they take the items, we can apply the 25% RUT deduction on the labour cost, and you save money.

But if the reuse centre says no — because the items are in too poor condition or for other reasons — we are forced to continue to the dump. In that case, no RUT deduction can be applied, and you pay the full labour cost.

We are a registered company with the Swedish Tax Agency and always handle the RUT deduction for you when it is possible.

  • Fixed price — no surprises afterwards
  • RUT included — you see exactly what you actually pay
  • Insured job — you are covered if anything happens
  • Book in 2 minutes — directly on your phone, no app to download
  • Or call us — and we will sort it out together

We also offer moving help, furniture assembly and carrying help — all with the RUT deduction. Read about RUT deduction on moving too. We operate across Sweden, with extra fast service in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Since 2014, we have completed over 50,000 jobs with an average rating of 4.8/5. Every job is carried out by young people getting their first employment — you make a difference for society while getting the job done.
